AIJN priorities on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
2025-12-09
Published in January 2025, the long-awaited Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) brings about a revolution for the making, using and disposal of packaging. Since the start of the discussions, AIJN has been involved in making the voice of the sector heard, and supporting institutions in the revision. Indeed, the sector fully believes that PPWR is a key opportunity to advance a more circular and competitive European economy.
This is even more important for fruit juices and nectars as packaging plays a critical role in their protection, transport and storage. As these products are microbiologically sensitive and cannot contain preservatives, packaging is thus the only barrier that ensures their safety, quality, and availability for consumers across Europe.
Consequently, to ensure the Regulation is effective and workable for the fruit juice sector, AIJN highlights the following priority necessities:
- Predictable and transparent implementation
- Harmonised rules across the EU
- Adapted reuse requirements
- Clarification on grouped packaging (Annex V)
- Recycled content and recycling technologies
- Design for Recycling guidelines
- Labelling requirements
The PPWR has the potential to significantly enhance the circularity and sustainability of Europe’s packaging system. Its success, however, depends on clear rules, harmonised implementation, and strong collaboration with stakeholders.
AIJN remains committed to working with EU institutions and partners to ensure that environmental progress goes hand in hand with food safety, product quality, and economic viability. Please find below the full text of our position paper.
