In its 2007-2013 consumer policy strategy, the European Commission underlined that allowing consumers to make informed choices was essential both for effective competition and consumer welfare. Correct labelling of juices is considered by the industry to be one of the main means of informing consumers about the properties of the product allowing them to make well substantiated choices. 

In addition to the EU Fruit Juice Directive and the General Food Labelling Directive that set marketing and labelling standards for juices, the industry has created a number of codes and guidelines to interpret these standards and set additional ones (e.g. QUID – Quantitative Ingredient Declaration, portion size, etc.,) 

In the proposal for a Regulation on the provision of Food Information to Consumers the European Commission foresees mandatory front of pack nutrition labelling schemes to illustrate recommended percentage intakes or guideline daily amounts (GDAs). In 2007 AIJN adopted a GDA Labelling Guideline which is being applied to a growing number of fruit juice and nectar brands around Europe in addition to the ingredient listing on pack.
